Different ways to keep more of your income
Texas sells a powerful combination: no state individual income tax, enormous job creation, global airports and mild winters. Missouri counters with lower property taxes, cheaper housing, extensive public recreation and four distinct seasons without the longest stretch of Texas heat. The right answer depends heavily on earnings, home value, insurance and the industry you work in.
Head-to-head numbers
These are rounded statewide indicators, not tax quotations. Texas property taxes are local and can vary dramatically by school district and appraisal. Zillow research data, 2026 Tax Foundation property taxes, 2025 MERIC, 2026

On a $400,000 assessed home, 0.88% is $3,520 and 1.6% is $6,400 before exemptions and assessment differences. Texas bills around $5,500–$9,000 are therefore plausible across many family-home and local-rate combinations, but a Missouri bill is not automatically “one third” of a Texas bill. Where Missouri wins
Lower recurring property-tax pressure
Missouri's effective rate is substantially below Texas's, and its lower home values compound the difference. Texas homestead exemptions can reduce school-district taxes, while Missouri credits and local exemptions depend on eligibility. Do not compare a Texas tax before exemptions with a Missouri tax after them. Texas Comptroller property taxes, 2026 Missouri State Tax Commission, 2026
Insurance deserves equal attention. Texas homeowners face significant wind, hail and hurricane exposure, and premiums have risen sharply in many markets; Missouri buyers also need hail and severe-storm coverage but generally avoid coastal hurricane exposure. Obtain address-specific quotes before closing. Texas Department of Insurance, 2026
Public land and water access
Mark Twain National Forest covers approximately 1.5 million acres, Missouri State Parks lists 92 parks and historic sites, and Ozark National Scenic Riverways protects the Current and Jacks Fork. These are places for ordinary hiking, camping and floating, not just private views from a road. U.S. Forest Service, 2026 Missouri State Parks, 2026 NPS, 2026
Roughly 95% of Texas land is privately owned, although the state has excellent parks, wildlife areas, national forests and Big Bend's vast public landscape. Missouri's advantage is accessible public land near its population centers, not a claim that Texas has none. Texas Parks & Wildlife land conservation, 2026 Big Bend, 2026
Four seasons and a shorter hot season
Missouri has humid summers, but also extended autumn color, spring wildflowers and real winter variation. Much of Texas experiences frequent 100°F days and a longer hot season, while northern Missouri's winters bring snow, ice and heating bills. NWS Missouri climate, 2026 NWS Texas climate, 2026
Historic urban housing
St. Louis and Kansas City retain extensive nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century neighborhoods, often at prices below comparable central Austin or Dallas housing. Older Missouri homes require masonry, roof, drainage and system inspections; low purchase prices are not free maintenance. St. Louis preservation, 2026 Zillow Missouri, 2026
Where Texas wins
No individual income tax
Texas does not levy a state individual income tax. A high earner renting an inexpensive home may benefit substantially from that structure even after accounting for property and sales taxes. A homeowner with a large appraisal can experience the opposite result. Texas Comptroller taxes, 2026
Job creation and corporate depth
Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio create multiple large, distinct labor markets in energy, technology, finance, logistics, healthcare and manufacturing. Texas has added major corporate headquarters and facilities at a scale Missouri has not matched. Texas Economic Development, 2026
Missouri has important employers and lower operating costs, but a specialized Texas job offer can outweigh its housing costs. Compare salary and advancement, not just the number of logos.
Global airports and mild winters
DFW and Houston Intercontinental provide deep domestic and international networks, including extensive Latin American connections. Missouri's STL and MCI airports are useful and easier to navigate, but they do not match that nonstop reach. DFW Airport, 2026 Houston Airports, 2026
Texas winters are generally milder, especially in the southern half of the state. Severe freezes, heat, drought and hurricanes still create real risks, so “mild” is not the same as resilient. NWS Houston climate, 2026
Pick Missouri if…
- You own or plan to own: Compare property tax and insurance over a full ownership period.
- Public access matters: Missouri offers forests, free state parks and national riverways.
- You want seasonal change: Autumn and spring arrive between genuinely different summer and winter conditions.
- You like older neighborhoods: Historic housing can cost less than central Texas alternatives.
- You prefer smaller airports and metros: Daily navigation can be simpler.
Pick Texas if…
- Your industry is concentrated there: Career depth may dominate every other factor.
- You are a high-earning renter: Zero wage tax can be especially favorable.
- You fly internationally: DFW and IAH provide exceptional route networks.
- You dislike winter: Southern Texas offers a much milder cold season.
